Building an Ergonomic Workstation from the Ground Up

, , ,

Let’s talk ergonomics

No matter what kind of office work you do, comfort and well-being matter. As more people spend long hours at computers, ergonomics has become essential. The best results come not from a single great chair, but from a complete workstation designed to support the person using it.

Ergonomics is the study of how people interact with their tools and environment. The goal is to fit the task to the person. Over time, good ergonomics improves health, reduces absences and helps employers meet their responsibilities to employees.

Start with an assessment

Before buying equipment, look at what’s happening now. Are people reporting discomfort? Where? An ergonomics professional can help identify problems and recommend solutions, then follow up to make sure the changes work.

The chair

Sit with your feet flat on the floor and your knees and hips at roughly 90 degrees, with two or three fingers of space between the back of your knees and the seat. Your lower back should be well supported, and armrests should let your arms rest with your elbows near 90 degrees. A recline between about 95 and 110 degrees is comfortable for most people.

The computer setup

Place your monitor directly in front of you, about an arm’s length away, with the top of the screen at or slightly below eye level. Keep your keyboard directly in front of you with wrists straight and shoulders relaxed, and your mouse close beside it.

Helpful extras

Footrests and document holders placed beside the monitor reduce strain on the legs and neck. Furniture can do a lot, but posture and movement matter too: take breaks, change positions and avoid holding tension.

Employers provide the tools, and employees need to speak up about discomfort and use the adjustments available. Central Oregon Office Interiors can help with ergonomic workstations for your whole team. Call (541) 797-3662.
