It’s hard to do your best work at a cluttered desk. Researchers writing in the Harvard Business Review found that people working at messy desks were less persistent and more frustrated than those working in tidy spaces. You don’t need a minimalist office, but a few smart tools can make a real difference.
“A place for everything, and everything in its place” is still good advice. Here are some of our favorite products for getting organized.
Paperwork and files
Even in a digital world, most of us still handle some paper. Mobile pedestals tuck under the desk to hold files, supplies and personal items, can roll to a new workspace and can even serve as an extra seat for a quick one-on-one. They also keep bags and laptops off the floor.
Desktop clutter
Paper trays and desktop organizers keep frequently used items within reach, and some include built-in power for charging devices. Panel-mounted organizers free up even more surface area by moving supplies onto the workstation walls.
Technology
Computers and cords can take over a desk quickly. A CPU holder mounts your computer under the work surface, monitor arms lift screens off the desk and position them at the right height, and cable management keeps wires tidy and out of the way.
